BYD has officially pulled the covers off the new Sealion 5 PHEV in South Africa, setting a new benchmark as the nation’s most affordable plug-in hybrid (PHEV). With a starting price of R499 900, BYD is clearly positioning the Sealion 5 to challenge South Africa’s hybrid leader, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.

At the Johannesburg launch event, BYD South Africa MD Steve Chang said the Sealion 5 is designed for everyday drivers who want hybrid efficiency without luxury-car price tags. According to Chang, South Africans are increasingly open to moving beyond traditional petrol power and embracing electrified mobility.

Single, Well-Specced PHEV Variant for the Local Market

South Africa will receive just one version of the Sealion 5: a 12kWh PHEV fitted with BYD’s advanced Blade Battery, DM-i hybrid tech, Super e-Platform, and cell-to-body construction. The model uses an NCM lithium battery and even supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, letting owners power appliances or accessories directly from the vehicle.

Impressive Efficiency and Strong Performance

The Sealion 5 packs 145kW from its electric motor and claims outstanding fuel economy of 1.2L/100km in mixed driving. Chang noted that even when driving with a depleted battery, owners should still see around 4.9–5.2L/100km—numbers that keep BYD competitive with Toyota’s proven hybrid systems.

Generous Standard Features Despite the Low Price

Commercial director Mark Handley highlighted the Sealion 5’s surprisingly extensive standard specification list, which includes:

  • Keyless entry
  • Electric tailgate
  • Roof rails
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Electrically adjustable front seats
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Voice control
  • 360° camera system
  • 8-inch infotainment display

Buyers also receive two bonuses at no extra charge:

  • A 3.5kW home wallbox charger
  • A V2L adapter

After-sales support includes:

  • 5-year/100 000km warranty
  • 4-year/60 000km service plan
  • 8-year/200 000km battery warranty

BYD Is Building Its Own Charging Network

BYD has confirmed plans to roll out its own national charging network. The first site is expected to go live in Q3 2026, with 200–300 chargers planned. The company is collaborating closely with Eskom, meeting weekly to accelerate progress.

More Dealerships and New Models on the Way

By the end of 2026, BYD aims to operate 30 dealerships locally. The brand will introduce three additional PHEV models next year. The Dolphin Surf EV currently leads BYD’s local sales, followed by the Shark 6 bakkie.

Although Chang acknowledges that South Africa’s electrified vehicle market is still emerging, he stresses that BYD is here to build momentum from the ground up.

The Sealion 5 is the company’s strongest push yet to reshape the market—and it’s arriving with serious intent.
