However, new indicators suggest that iOS 26’s next major update is just around the corner. Despite previous delays, the rollout may actually arrive sooner than expected.
Apple is now nudging users toward iOS 26 more prominently. According to MacRumors, iPhones still running iOS 18 will now see iOS 26.1 highlighted as the recommended update in the Settings app, while iOS 18 updates are relegated to the bottom of the list. This subtle shift signals Apple’s clear intent to transition users to the newer system, though it stops short of making the upgrade mandatory.
Historically, Apple has released updates for iOS 26 alongside corresponding iOS 18 patches. The first couple of updates were simultaneous, but the most recent iOS 18 update, version 18.7.2, arrived several days later, suggesting Apple is gradually steering users toward iOS 26. While a follow-up iOS 18.7.3 release may still occur after iOS 26.2 goes live, the likelihood is that iOS 26.2 will become the primary choice for most users.
The timeline for iOS 26.2’s release is now more concrete. On December 3, Apple issued the release candidate to developers, indicating the update is on track for a general rollout around December 15 or 16. However, it’s possible the update could appear even earlier, with December 8, 9, or 10 also being strong candidates, given the early release of the RC build.
Industry sources largely agree on this schedule. MSN notes that Apple typically releases x.2 updates during the second week of December, and T3 speculates that it could arrive “as soon as next week.” Geeky Gadgets has cited December 8 as the expected launch, though Apple has not officially confirmed this date.
Looking ahead, the iOS 26.3 beta is expected to be released during the week of December 15, according to reports. Meanwhile, Apple’s push for users to upgrade implies that the iOS 18 option may soon be removed from most devices, leaving only a handful of older iPhones—such as the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR—eligible to continue using iOS 18. Users with iPhone 17 models, including the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, received iOS 26 pre-installed and will have no alternative.
