BYD has all but confirmed that its bold new TI 7 large SUV is on the way to Australia, with recent comments from the brand’s local leadership lining up perfectly with the SUV’s global reveal.
In a conversation with CarsGuide, newly appointed BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins hinted strongly that a larger, Prado-sized SUV was the next major gap the brand plans to fill in its local lineup.
“We’re definitely looking at a larger SUV,” Collins said when asked what BYD is missing in Australia. “Something that leans toward comfort but still carries some off-road capability.”
He added that BYD’s future large SUV would not use a ladder-frame chassis, instead pointing toward a more modern and refined platform. Days later, BYD removed all speculation by unveiling the TI 7 in Thailand — a near five-metre-long SUV wearing off-road styling and built on a monocoque architecture.
A Plug-In Hybrid Powerhouse
The TI 7 is configured as a five-seat plug-in hybrid, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 115kW and 225Nm with dual electric motors—one powering each axle.
A 35.6kWh battery pack supplies the EV system and reportedly delivers up to 200km of electric-only driving, though real-world figures will likely be lower once tested under stricter global standards.
Capable, But Comfort-Oriented
While the TI 7 isn’t designed as a hardcore off-roader, it still brings respectable ability. The SUV includes dedicated off-road drive modes and claims a 600mm wading depth, making it suitable for light adventure duties.
Inside, the TI 7 showcases BYD’s latest tech suite:
- 15.6-inch central infotainment display
- 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
- Optional 13.0-inch rear-seat entertainment screens
The cabin layout suggests BYD is aiming for a premium-feel family SUV with ample comfort for daily driving.
A Big Year Ahead for BYD in Australia
With the TI 7’s reveal aligning closely with Mr Collins’ comments, all signs point to BYD preparing a significant expansion of its Australian SUV lineup.
“The real push in SUVs and passenger vehicles is happening right now and will continue into next year,” Collins said, hinting that the TI 7 could become a key pillar of BYD’s Australian growth strategy.
