Smart, once famous for its ultra-compact Fortwo city car, has been shifting in a radically new direction since partnering with Geely in 2019. Each new model has grown noticeably in size, and the latest addition pushes that evolution even further.
A Mid-Size Sedan That Dwarfs the Original Fortwo
The new Smart #6 EHD arrives as the company’s largest vehicle ever, stepping confidently into the mid-size PHEV sedan segment. Its dimensions—4906mm long, 1922mm wide and 1508mm tall, riding on a 2926mm wheelbase—put it right alongside mainstream sedans like the Toyota Camry. To put things into perspective, it’s nearly twice the length of the original Smart Fortwo.
Punchy Plug-In Hybrid Power
Under the bonnet, Smart has fitted a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined 320kW. Power is sent through a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).
Supporting the system is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with driving figures based on CLTC testing:
- Up to 285km of electric-only range
- Total driving range of around 1810km
Smart has not yet confirmed whether a fully electric #6 will follow to take on the BYD Seal or Tesla Model 3, but given the brand’s new EV-centric direction, the possibility remains strong.
Sleek, Swooping Design With Bold Personality
The Smart #6 EHD leans into a modern, streamlined look, featuring smooth curves and a sporty fastback-inspired silhouette. The debut model, draped in a bright eye-catching yellow, breaks away from the more subdued colours Smart has used for recent releases.
Key exterior highlights include:
- Large alloy wheels with yellow brake calipers
- Flush-fitting door handles
- Electrically retractable rear spoiler
- Roof-mounted LiDAR, hinting at advanced semi-autonomous features
Interior Still Under Wraps
Smart hasn’t revealed cabin photos yet, but expectations are high. Given the brand’s recent design language, the interior will likely feature:
- A large central touchscreen
- A minimalist, tech-driven layout
- Multiple digital displays and a smart user interface
Smart’s Return to Australia Continues to Grow
Although Smart exited the Australian market in 2015, the brand made a comeback in 2024 with the Smart #1 and Smart #3 electric SUVs under the guidance of LSH Auto, Mercedes-Benz’s distributor.
Australia even served as the global debut location for the Smart #5—once considered the brand’s largest model—though its local launch has been delayed to early 2026. With the new #6 now entering the picture, Smart’s Australian revival looks set to expand even further.
