If you are using an Android smartphone, you must have noticed some unexpected changes in your phone a few days ago. Some may have even been shocked to see how the settings of their mobile changed without their consent.
Many Android users are surprised by this sudden change in their phone’s call and dialer settings.
Many people on social media are asking questions about this on their phones, while some are also expressing anger about it.
After this change, when making or receiving a call from an Android phone, the appearance of the phone’s interface, i.e. the display and design, changed.
Many people are surprised that they neither changed any phone settings nor tampered with it, yet how the call screen in the phone changed automatically. Some people even expressed fear that their phone might have been hacked.
Numerous Android users have discussed these modifications to their devices across different social media platforms, particularly on platform X.
These alterations have exclusively affected Android phones, so iOS users do not need to be concerned, as no similar changes have occurred on their devices.
However, questions arise regarding the reasons for these changes on Android phones, how these settings were adjusted, and whether they can be restored to their former state.
‘Hacking’ or update, what is the truth?
Numerous Android users have sought their own solutions to this issue.
Some are associating it with ‘hacking,’ while others worry that this update serves as a means of surveillance by government entities.
“Congratulations, your phone settings have also been altered. A software has been automatically installed that will now mimic your words like a parrot,” one user commented on X.
Another user questioned, “The settings on the mobile phone you’re holding have unexpectedly changed. Do you genuinely believe you are secure?”
On the other hand, a different user argued that altering the phone’s display settings does not equate to ‘hacking’ or indicate that the company is stealing your photos or messages.
This user explained that mobile companies periodically update software for phones to enhance their performance and security.
What triggered the recent change?
Google develops the core software (OS) utilized in Android devices and periodically releases updates.
In May of this year, the company announced it would introduce an update named ‘Material 3D Expressive,’ which is expected to be one of its most significant updates in recent years.
According to Google, this update aims to enhance the phone’s software and interface, making them simpler, faster, and more user-friendly than before.
Previously, the display of our Android phones operated on a design called ‘Material 3D.’ Google mentioned that “its consistent use has led to billions of users becoming reliant on it.”
The company stated that various aspects of the new display settings are being modified, including notifications, color themes, photos, Gmail, and watch features, among others.
How were the settings changed without the user’s permission?
Google has revealed that the call app design for Android phones has been updated as part of the ‘Material 3D Expressive’ release.
This update was initially launched in June for select users and has since been phased in more broadly.
As per Google, the goal of this change is to enhance the usability of the calling app on Android devices.
The company has eliminated the ‘Recent Calls’ and ‘Favorites’ features, integrating them into ‘Home.’ Therefore, when you open the Phone app to make a call, you will only see the ‘Home’ and ‘Keypad’ options.
Google indicates that calls from the same number will no longer be grouped together; instead, they will appear in the call history chronologically. This means users won’t have to repeatedly search for a contact.
According to Google, this adjustment will help users better comprehend their call history. The company also notes that there will be no need to check each number separately to see the count of missed or answered calls.
In addition, the design of the ‘Incoming Call’ feature has been modified based on user feedback. This redesign aims to prevent users from unintentionally answering or ending calls while retrieving their phones from their pockets.
From Google’s communications and social media interactions, it appears that many users’ phone applications have been updated automatically. However, there are still numerous individuals whose phone settings remain unchanged.
A user on the Google blog has provided an explanation for this. They noted that some users have opted for the auto-update feature in the Google Play Store (the platform for downloading or updating apps). Consequently, certain apps receive updates automatically.
They mentioned that users can disable these auto-updates and select the ‘Uninstall Update’ option by accessing their phone settings and reverting the call display settings to their previous configurations.
The well-known mobile brand OnePlus has shared a similar sentiment.
When a user on the social media platform X inquired about this, the company responded, “This isn’t from OnePlus; it’s an update to the Google Phone app. If you prefer the previous style on your device, you have the option to uninstall the update.”
So, if you’ve noticed these recent changes on your Android phone, there’s no need to be concerned.
However, if you still favor the old style and wish to avoid these new updates, you can uninstall the latest update as well.
