2026 Hyundai Elexio: A fresh sighting in Melbourne has confirmed that Hyundai’s upcoming electric SUV, the Elexio, is getting closer to its Australian debut.
Spotted on the back of a transport truck finished in crisp white paint, the mid-size Elexio was seen travelling with another Hyundai model, hinting that local testing and logistics are now well underway. This appearance adds to a growing list of evidence pointing to the EV’s imminent arrival.
The Elexio first appeared in Australian compliance documents back in September, securing official approval for sale. Not long after, it was caught undergoing real-world testing on Sydney roads. Hyundai later confirmed the model would launch locally in early 2026.
Developed by Beijing Hyundai—a joint venture between Hyundai and China’s BAIC Motor—the Elexio shares the same version of the E-GMP electric platform that underpins the Kia EV5. Two powertrain options will be offered: a 160kW single-motor setup driving the front wheels, and a punchier 230kW dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant.
An 88.1kWh battery sits beneath the floor, enabling more than 500km of range on the WLTP cycle. When plugged into a DC fast charger, the Elexio can jump from 30 to 80 per cent in roughly 27 minutes.
Inside, Hyundai has equipped the cabin with premium tech touches, including a slim 27-inch 4K display that stretches across the dash and a head-up display for the driver.
When it arrives next year, the Elexio will enter one of Australia’s most competitive EV segments. Its rivals include the Tesla Model Y and Geely EX5, both of which continue to attract strong demand. Pricing for Australia hasn’t been revealed yet, but expectations suggest it will undercut the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which now starts at $76,200 before on-road costs.
The Elexio is part of a broader electric push from Hyundai. The brand is preparing to introduce a performance-focused Ioniq 6 variant in the first half of 2026, and a new-generation hydrogen-powered Nexo SUV is also on the way for that same year.
Hyundai’s electric future is picking up speed—and the Elexio looks set to play a key role in expanding the brand’s more affordable EV options.
